Antonio Tajani, the Italian foreign minister, stated that the European Union needs a major institutional reform to regain its influence on the world stage. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Tajani emphasized the necessity of eliminating the veto power of member states in many areas of policy and proposed combining the roles of the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council, with the latter being directly elected by citizens.
He also suggested that the European Parliament should have the power to propose new laws and called for a drastic reduction in bureaucracy, proposing that for every new regulation, two existing regulations should be repealed. These measures are intended to strengthen the position of the European Union internationally.
