Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, stated that the European Union will need to discuss with Russia in the future about European security and peace in Ukraine, but not at present. Responding to the call of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever to normalize relations with Moscow, Costa emphasized that the EU must continue to support Ukraine and maintain economic pressure on Russia.
He mentioned that, although it is important to be prepared for the eventuality that American President Donald Trump's efforts for peace may not yield results, the current strategy of the EU is to decouple from Russian energy, not to negotiate its price. Costa rejected the idea of an energy agreement with Russia and emphasized that, despite the exemptions for Hungary and Slovakia, the EU must remain firm in its support for Ukraine.
