Alexander De Croo, a member of the Flemish liberal party Open VLD, has been appointed administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and under-secretary-general of the UN, succeeding Achim Steiner. The decision was made by Secretary-General António Guterres, after weeks of deliberations without consensus in the selection committee. The UN General Assembly is expected to confirm the appointment, considered a formality. Peter Piot, former UN under-secretary-general, described the appointment as an honor for Belgium, highlighting the importance of UNDP in global development.
