The decision was made by Secretary-General António Guterres, after weeks of deliberations without consensus in the selection committee. The UN General Assembly is expected to confirm the appointment, considered a formality. Peter Piot, former UN under-secretary-general, described the appointment as an honor for Belgium, highlighting the importance of UNDP in global development.
