The earthquake occurred on Thursday, without immediate reports of significant damage in the city with 16 million inhabitants. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Sea of Marmara, southwest of Istanbul, near the coastal city of Marmaraereğlisi, along a geological fault line long considered a danger to the city.
