The young man was charged and jailed by France's National Anti-Terrorist Public Prosecutor's Office and detained following an investigation. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said he was not about to commit an attack but was preparing for violent action. His lawyer stressed that the suspect was a "tormented child" and that there was no real desire to act. There was also talk of a rapprochement between the Sunni and Shia communities in the context of jihadism.
