The WHO Regional Office for Europe has announced that the flu season has started approximately four weeks earlier than usual, with a new dominant strain, A(H3N2), putting pressure on health systems in many countries. Flu activity is high in 27 of the 38 countries that have reported data, and in some countries, such as Ireland and the United Kingdom, more than half of the tested patients have been confirmed with the flu.

Hans Kluge, the WHO Director for Europe, emphasized that although the A(H3N2) strain is responsible for the majority of infections, there is no evidence that it causes more severe forms of the disease. The seasonal flu vaccine is effective in reducing the risks of serious complications, and WHO recommends vaccination, especially for vulnerable groups.

An increase in cases is expected until the peak of the flu season, anticipated at the end of December or the beginning of January. Most infected individuals will recover, but those with severe symptoms should consult doctors.
