The mitochondrial donation technique, used in the UK, combines the DNA of three people to prevent diseases caused by mitochondrial mutations. Eight children, including identical twins, were born healthy with no signs of disease. The method, legalized in 2015, offers hope to parents at risk of passing on genetic diseases. The recent results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlighting the importance of this innovation in reproductive medicine. Children will be monitored for up to 5 years to assess their development.
