The infant mortality rate in Romania increased from 5.6 to 6.6 per thousand live births in 2024, after a decade of stagnation. This increase is concerning, as Romania is among the countries with the lowest health budget allocations in the European Union, at only 5.2% of GDP.
The organization 'Save the Children' emphasizes that countries that invest more in health have significantly lower infant mortality rates. In 2024, 952 children died before reaching one year of age, with the main causes being respiratory diseases, chromosomal abnormalities, and congenital malformations. The organization has received requests for support from 35 medical units for the provision of vital medical equipment, estimating costs of over 3 million euros.
Save the Children Romania continues to implement support programs for maternity wards, aiming to reduce infant mortality by equipping with state-of-the-art equipment and complex interventions for the care of at-risk newborns.
