A recent study published in the journal eClinicalMedicine highlighted the risks associated with phthalates, chemical compounds commonly used in plastic production. According to the research, exposure to di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DiNP) could be responsible for nearly two million premature births and approximately 74,000 deaths of newborns globally in 2018.
Premature births, defined as those occurring before 37 weeks of gestation, can lead to severe complications, including respiratory problems and developmental delays. Phthalates are present in numerous consumer products, from toys and food packaging to cosmetics. The study suggests that they may affect placental function, increasing the risk of premature births. Researchers analyzed data from over 200 countries, finding that regions with expanding plastic industries, such as Africa and South Asia, have the highest burden of premature births.
Although the research does not demonstrate a direct causal relationship, experts recommend reducing exposure to phthalates by choosing products labeled 'phthalate-free' and implementing stricter regulations to protect consumer health.
