The first round of this year's presidential elections has led to the resignation of Marcel Ciolacu as premier and president of the PSD, with the Social Democrats waiting for the second round to take place before electing a new leader.
The Social Democratic Party will nominate its new leadership in the fall, when the congress is scheduled to take place, opting for an interim president - Sorin Grindeanu.
According to data aggregated and analyzed with NewsVibe, a real-time monitoring and analysis software of online conversations, online mentions of Sorin Grindeanu peaked in the last month, when he was appointed as interim president of PSD. But it was not the only episode that generated visibility.
In the campaign between the two rounds, Sorin Grindeanu's interventions - in which he emphasized his conviction that Romania could not leave the EU if the elections were won by George Simion - attracted numerous mentions. During the same period, he had a long-distance feud with former president Traian Băsescu and sent messages on the salary situation at the Bucharest Airports National Company and on projects managed by the ministry.
Since his election as head of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu's name has been mentioned especially in contexts relating to the formation of a new parliamentary majority for the investiture of a new government and in those related to major infrastructure projects.
