In the last two weeks, the European press has paid attention to Romanians and Romania, especially in Italy, Germany, and Greece, with topics related to crime, security, labor, and energy, while secondary topics included some positive aspects of sports, cars, and tourism. The analysis is based exclusively on data collected by the media monitoring platform NewsVibe Romania for the period of January 31 – February 6, 2026. The data was collected by the NewsVibe Romania media monitoring platform during the last month, finding 4,569 articles published in European countries, especially in Germany, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Top Discussed Topics About Romania

The PAOK Tragedy in Romania

The tragedy involving PAOK supporters in Romania remains the most visible subject, with the most publicized episode being the road accident on DN6 near Lugoj, in which seven supporters of the PAOK Thessaloniki football team died and three others were seriously injured while traveling from Greece to Lyon for a Europa League match; the news was extensively covered in Greece, Germany, France, Spain, and in the European sports press, with Romania being constantly mentioned as the location of the tragedy, the intervention of the authorities, and later, the repatriation ceremony.

In Greece, the portal Protothema created a comprehensive dossier about the accident in Romania, presenting the timeline of the head-on collision between the supporters' minibus and the truck registered in Romania, the reactions of the club, the decision for the away supporters' sector to remain empty at the match in Lyon, and the gestures of solidarity from other European clubs, which outlines a Romanian-Greek relationship marked primarily by symbolism and emotion, with the Greek press noting messages of condolence, cooperation for the repatriation of the victims, and the solidarity of clubs from Romania, in an empathetic and sometimes positive tone.

The Sabotage in Hamburg

A second highly publicized subject is the series of news from the German press regarding the attempted sabotage of German military ships in the port of Hamburg, in which one of the suspects is a Romanian citizen involved in a security case relevant to NATO and the European Union, suspected, along with a Greek citizen, of attempting to compromise corvettes of the German naval forces under construction.

The publications T online and Tagesschau place this case in a broader context of vulnerabilities in German military infrastructure, recalling that, as early as the previous year, dangerous material had been discovered in the engine of the Emden ship, while Spiegel and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung insist on the dimension of internal security and the investigations of the federal prosecutor's office and specialized services, without linking Romania, as a state, to a hostile agenda, but presenting the facts at an individual level.

The general tone of the German press remains neutral and institutional, with an emphasis on official statements and investigation documents, but the explicit mention of Romanian nationality may have a diffuse effect on the image of the Romanian community in Germany.

The Vasile Frumuzache Case

A third major coverage pole emerges in Italy, where the murder case for which Vasile Frumuzache is accused generates a large volume of articles about serious crimes committed by a Romanian citizen; Frumuzache is described as a serial killer of escorts, accused of killing two prostitutes between the localities of Prato and Montecatini, Ana Maria Andrei and Maria Denisa Păun, and of attempting to escape from the Sollicciano prison in Florence.

National and regional publications, such as Il Fatto Quotidiano, ANSA, and La Stampa, cover the case in detail, addressing judicial elements such as the start of the trial and the charges for double homicide, as well as details such as the list of names and addresses found on him, the escape method using bed sheets, and the description of the prison as a structure full of breaches. The newspaper Il Giornale uses the case to criticize the Italian prison system, insisting on the fragility of the detention infrastructure, while maintaining the focus on the profile of the recidivist criminal of Romanian origin. The tone in the Italian press is strongly negative, focusing on the atrocity of the acts and the escape attempt, while the frequent association of the terms Romanian, serial killer, escort killer, and crimes against prostitutes amplifies an already sensitive stereotype, that of associating some segments of the Romanian community in Italy with serious crime.

Sorana Cîrstea vs Naomi Osaka

On a secondary level, but with transnational visibility, is the episode at the Australian Open featuring Sorana Cîrstea and Naomi Osaka, interpreted in the press as a perception conflict related to respect between the two players. BBC Sport, The Independent, and Le Figaro report on the cold handshake at the end of the second-round match and that Naomi Osaka publicly apologized for behavior perceived by the Romanian player as disrespectful, emphasizing, in presenting the situation, that Sorana Cîrstea is the Romanian player, a victim of this attitude.

The general tone is relatively neutral, with favorable nuances towards the Romanian player, focusing on Osaka's apologies and Sorana Cîrstea's right to react, without Romanian nationality being associated with negative cultural labels, and at the image level, Romania is associated with a competitive athlete, visibly in a global media context dominated by well-known names.

General Tone in the European Press:

Of the 4,569 articles, 3,700 (82%) have a neutral tone, 666 (15%) negative, and 157 (3%) positive.
