The European Commission declared on Tuesday that Slovakia's decision to impose higher prices for fuels intended for vehicles registered abroad is illegal. The Slovak government has adopted measures that restrict diesel refueling and introduced a differentiated pricing system, which has been deemed discriminatory by the Community Executive. The Commission's spokesperson, Ricardo Cardoso, emphasized that these measures contravene EU law and urged member states to avoid unilateral actions. The Commission will take legal action to ensure compliance with European rules. In the context of the energy crisis caused by the war in Iran, EU states have adopted various measures to mitigate the impact on citizens, but these must be coordinated to avoid imbalances in the single market. The Commission also intends to activate the emergency mechanism in the single market to prevent the imposition of trade barriers that could worsen the situation.
