Montenegro took an important step on Wednesday towards joining the European Union, obtaining the green light from the 27 member states to continue the process. The Foreign Minister, Maida Gorcevic, stated that the news from Brussels is excellent and emphasized that Montenegro is on the right track to become the 28th member of the EU by 2028.

The European Commission welcomed this decision, although it mentioned that the timeline proposed by Montenegro is ambitious. The recently established working group will set the exact terms of accession, which vary from one country to another, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law. The last country to join the EU was Croatia in 2013, and Montenegro, along with Albania, is considered one of the most advanced countries in this process.
