A recent study published in the journal Nature Climate Change, coordinated by glaciologist Lander Van Tricht, presents an alarming forecast regarding the disappearance of glaciers worldwide. It is estimated that, without effective measures against climate change, between 2,000 and 4,000 glaciers could disappear annually by the middle of the 21st century. A rise in global temperatures by a few degrees Celsius could drastically reduce the number of surviving glaciers by 2100, from nearly 50% to less than 10%.

Researchers used satellite data to analyze 211,490 glaciers and identified a "peak of glacier extinction," predicting that their disappearance will reach a maximum of 2,000 glaciers per year in 2041, even in optimistic scenarios. In the case of a 2.7°C increase, approximately 3,000 glaciers would disappear annually between 2040 and 2060, and by 2100, only 43,852 glaciers would still survive. In the most pessimistic scenario, with a 4°C increase, only 9% of glaciers would withstand until the end of the century. The disappearance of glaciers not only affects sea level but also tourism and local culture, highlighting the urgency for ambitious climate policies.
