The University of Bucharest opened, at the beginning of the new academic year, the first reinforced and restored faculty in the University Palace. Students of the Faculty of History were welcomed into the landmark building in the center of the capital by President Nicușor Dan, a former student of the Faculty of Mathematics.
The reinforcement and restoration works aim to preserve the building’s historic features, including bullet marks from the Revolution. The office used by Nicolae Iorga and part of the old furniture have been conserved, while the crowned eagle and the two griffins on the pediment have been recovered.
The project was approved in 2020, but work did not begin until 2023. The University Palace has five sections that need to be restored. After the Faculty of History, work will continue at the Faculty of Mathematics, where more than 2,000 students have been relocated for approximately a year and a half, followed by Chemistry, Letters and Geology.
The university is also preparing a museum circuit that will include the ruins of the Princely Academy, the University balcony and exhibitions dedicated to the protests and miners’ riots of 1990. The investment is estimated at 450 million lei, and the entire project is expected to be completed in approximately five years.
