The National History Museum of Romania will be restored and structurally reinforced in a project estimated to take approximately five years. Work on the landmark building on Calea Victoriei is expected to begin in early 2028, after the tenders are completed and the heritage collection is moved to a special storage facility.
More than 17 million objects, including the philatelic collection, have already been packed and prepared for transport. Authorities are considering several options for building the storage facility, which is expected to be constructed next year. During the works, part of the collection will be displayed in alternative exhibition spaces.
The building, with a surface area of more than 40,000 square metres, is classified in seismic risk categories I and II and has structural and functional problems. The project includes reinforcing the building, modernising its security and fire-protection systems, and replacing the central section.
The new design will include an extension in the inner courtyard, which will be reopened to the public and provide an additional entrance from the Old Town. The project is in the final approval stage, and the technical and economic indicators are expected to be approved by the Government by the end of the year. Funding is secured through a loan agreement with the Council of Europe Development Bank.
