The Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Grozdan Karadjov, stated that the construction of several bridges over the Danube is a strategic priority not only for Bulgaria and Romania but also for the entire European Union and NATO. During a meeting with representatives of the European Commission, he highlighted the importance of finalizing the Memorandum of Understanding between Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania, which is expected to be signed by the end of the year. However, Romania is hesitant about Bulgaria's requests, fearing that carriers will prefer Bulgarian ports, which would affect the Port of Constanța.
Karadjov emphasized that Bulgaria is working intensively on the Fast Danube 2 project and is dredging the Danube to ensure its navigability. The new bridges will stimulate the development of related infrastructure, generating jobs and attracting investments in border areas. Representatives of the European Commission confirmed that these projects will benefit from funding from various sources, emphasizing that the regions on both banks of the Danube are among the least developed in the EU. The signing of the trilateral memorandum would mark the beginning of extensive collaboration, having a positive impact on the economic development of the region.
