Sorin Grindeanu, as president of the Chamber of Deputies, and two other PSD deputies from Hunedoara, Natalia Intotero and Ilie Toma, met with representatives of the Canadian company Euro Sun Mining, which promotes a gold and copper mining project at Rovina, and the PSD leader "committed to accelerate" the legislative process of a project for the expropriation of Romanian citizens in favor of private companies, writes Romania Curata.
According to Euro Sun Mining's statements, Grindeanu and the other participants promised to accelerate the legislative process to allow the exploitation of Romania's resources.
The law was registered in the Senate on February 17, 2026, with a request for urgent procedure debate, but it was postponed after the reaction of civil society, which gathered over 25,000 signatures against it.
The bill is criticized for potentially allowing expropriations in private interest, without respecting environmental protection standards. Additionally, the short deadlines for authorization and contestation could limit access to justice for the affected communities.
