Rompetrol Rafinare supports that the current tax regime endangers the company's activity and the energy security of Romania.

Rompetrol Rafinare stated that the tax regime established in December 2022, which includes measures for overtaxation and new taxes on turnover, has existential consequences for the company. These taxes, such as IMCA, generate a cascading taxation, increasing the effective tax rate to over 100%. The company, which covers 30% of the national fuel demand and is the main supplier for the defense aviation, warns that the discontinuity of its activity could affect Romania's energy security and financial stability. Rompetrol has challenged the specific tax and the solidarity contribution at the Constitutional Court, and in the first half of 2025, it reported a net loss of 53 million dollars, although turnover increased by 32%. The refining segment performed well, but losses in petrochemicals and decreased fuel demand affected overall results. Rompetrol contributed over 771 million dollars to the state budget in the first half of 2025.
