Romania is currently facing a record gas consumption, reaching 62 million cubic meters per day, the highest level in the last eight years, due to the cold wave. Although gas storage is 59% full, the technical extraction capacity is limited, which has led the country to import large quantities of gas at high prices.

How much gas has Romania imported

According to data from Transgaz cited by HotNews, on Monday evening at 21:00, Romania consumed 62 million cubic meters per day, a quantity that has not been reached since 2018. From current domestic production, 23.6 million cubic meters came, from storage – 26.2 million cubic meters, and from imports – 19.7 million cubic meters. At the same time, Romania exported 7.5 million cubic meters to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

Imports came mainly from Bulgaria and Hungary, and expert Dumitru Chisăliță emphasizes that without this gas, Romania would not have been able to cover its consumption. The main problem remains the reduced extraction capacity from storage, which could lead to the need to import gas even after the start of resource exploitation in the Black Sea. The Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, did not mention the large imports and extraction problems in his recent statements, focusing instead on the filling level of the storage facilities.
