Romania is preparing for a winter with periods of low temperatures, amid high gas prices and tensions on international markets. Cristian Busoi, secretary of state at the Ministry of Energy, said Tuesday that the authorities are monitoring the evolution of stocks and estimate that the country will not face a crisis regarding available supplies.
Gas storage facilities are 73.57% full, above the European average and within the minimum limits stipulated by legislation. The authorities are trying to increase storage levels to avoid imports from the spot market during the winter, at very high prices.
Household consumers and district heating systems benefit, until the end of winter and the beginning of spring, from a regulated mechanism under which suppliers receive gas from domestic production at 110 lei/MWh, in accordance with Emergency Ordinance No. 12/2026. Busoi warned, however, that prices for industry and large consumers remain a concern.
The pressures are being amplified by the conflict in Ukraine, production problems in Qatar, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Romania is also under an energy alert, extended from August 30, following the shutdown of the Cernavoda reactors and reduced hydropower production amid low Danube flows.
