New car registrations in Romania increased by 2.7% in April 2026, with a 26% increase for electrified vehicles, which hold a market share of 68%.

In April 2026, new car registrations in Romania increased by 2.7% compared to the same period in 2025, according to data from the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA). Electrified vehicles recorded a significant increase of 26%, holding a market share of 68%. The SUV segment leads the market with 62%, followed by Class C (19.4%) and Class B (12.1%).


Regarding the type of fuel, gasoline engines decreased by 15.3%, while diesel engines dropped by 43.3%. Electric cars have a market share of 6.3%, and plug-in hybrids 9.8%. The best-selling electric cars are the Tesla Model Y, BYD Dolphin Surf, and Dacia Spring. Among hybrid cars, the Toyota Corolla is in first place. Light commercial vehicles increased by 0.1%, while heavy commercial vehicles recorded a decrease of 0.1%. APIA is a non-profit organization, a member of OICA since 1996.
