Hungary has reached a historic milestone, having gold reserves of 110 tons, surpassing Romania, which stagnates at 103.6 tons.
The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) has implemented an aggressive gold purchasing strategy, increasing reserves more than tenfold since 2018. In 2024, the centenary year of its establishment, the National Bank of Hungary decided to increase gold reserves from 94.5 tons to 110 tons.
Unlike Romania, where 60% of gold is stored in the vaults of the Bank of England, Hungary focuses its reserves on physical presence. Additionally, Hungary has the largest gold reserves per capita in Central and Eastern Europe, with a recent increase from 0.32 ounces to 0.37 ounces.
Hungary's strategy to increase gold reserves aligns with global trends, where gold demand reached a historic record of over 5,000 tons in 2025.
Central banks around the world continue to buy gold, with Poland being the largest recent buyer.
