According to the Global Risks Report published by the World Economic Forum, rivalries between major powers and strategic confrontations are the most severe risks to the global economy in the outlook for 2026. Almost half of the surveyed leaders foresee a turbulent period in the next two years, while only 1% expect stability. Geoeconomic confrontation has become the main concern, fueled by competition between states and the use of economic tools as strategic weapons. Additionally, economic risks such as recession and inflation have significantly increased in leaders' perceptions.
The report also highlights risks related to misinformation and social polarization, with inequality identified as the most important long-term risk. A rapidly emerging risk is that associated with artificial intelligence, which could exacerbate inequalities and social discontent. Although environmental risks have been considered less of a priority in the short term, extreme weather phenomena remain a major concern for the next decade. The WEF concludes that collaboration between different sectors is essential for increasing global resilience, yet geopolitical competition raises serious questions about the capacity for cooperation in critical times.
