The Railway Reform Authority (ARF) has named Siemens Mobility the winner of the tender for the purchase of 23 new electric locomotives, under a project with a total value of 764,398,846.68 lei, equivalent to approximately 154 million euros. The locomotives will be able to travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h and haul up to 16 passenger carriages.
Siemens Mobility’s bid was ranked first after the evaluation of the three proposals submitted and the verification of the supporting documents. The contract includes the supply of locomotives equipped with ERTMS systems, as well as maintenance and repair services.
The project aims to modernize passenger rail transport and replace rolling stock with high energy consumption and high carbon dioxide emissions. The new equipment is designed to be more efficient and less polluting.
Of the total value, 638.88 million lei represents eligible funding from the Modernization Fund, while 125.52 million lei comes from the state budget through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Project implementation is estimated at 42 months.
The contract has not yet been signed. The procedure may proceed after the deadline for filing appeals expires and, if any are submitted, after they have been resolved.
