Airlines in the United States recorded a 56.4% increase in jet fuel expenses in March, reaching $5.06 billion, compared to $3.23 billion in February.
This increase was influenced by disruptions in energy traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil transport. Fuel prices continued to rise in April, exceeding $4 per gallon in certain regions. Following these increased costs, airlines have begun to revise their expansion plans and financial estimates for 2026.
Spirit Airlines announced that the rise in fuel prices has affected its bankruptcy exit plans.
However, demand for air travel remains strong, with a 12% increase in ticket sales in March. Major airlines estimate that they will be able to pass on the additional costs to passengers by raising fares by the end of the year or in 2027.
