Ionel Bazoiu, a 20-year-old Romanian, died on Sunday after drowning in the La Morea reservoir in Beriáin, Navarra. Together with a 25-year-old friend, he was pulled unconscious from the water and rushed to the University Hospital of Navarra, where his condition was declared extremely critical.
Ionel, originally from Buzău, worked in construction and was passionate about football. The tragedy occurred around 5:30 PM, when several witnesses noticed the young man's difficulties in the water. Rescue efforts were coordinated by firefighters and medical teams, but Ionel had swallowed a lot of water and mud, which led to his death.
His friend remains hospitalized, dependent on oxygen. The Regional Police of Navarra has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy, which has increased the number of drownings in the region to seven in the last two months. The area is popular for swimming, but it does not have a lifeguard, and safety conditions are different from those in swimming pools.
