The University of Cambridge included the Romanian language in its official academic offer in 2025, by establishing a lectureship within the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics. This initiative was made possible due to the collaboration between the Romanian Embassy in London, the Ministry of Education and Research, and the Institute of the Romanian Language, coordinated by Dr. Ștefania Costea.
The introduction of the Romanian language into the curriculum was inspired by Professor Adam Ledgeway, who noticed that students knew other Romance languages but not Romanian. The initial optional courses gained popularity, and the newly inaugurated lectureship expands these efforts. The program includes language courses, thematic seminars, and cultural events, such as 'Romanian Movie Night', which promotes Romanian cinema. Students from various fields and diverse backgrounds enroll in the courses, motivated by personal connections or interest in Romanian culture.
