Cambridge University has established a Romanian language Lectureship within the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, a project supported by the Government of Romania through the Romanian Language Institute and promoted by the Romanian Embassy in London. The Lectureship will organize open Romanian language courses for beginners and intermediates, as well as cultural events to promote the Romanian language and culture in the British academic environment.
The Romanian Ambassador, Laura Popescu, visited the university in October 2025, expressing appreciation for the collaboration in implementing this project. The Lectureship will be coordinated by Dr. Ștefania Costea, who has solid academic experience at Cambridge. The academic offer will include weekly courses, thematic seminars, and screenings of Romanian films, all accessible to university members. This is the second initiative of this kind in the United Kingdom, following the one at Oxford University, inaugurated in 2012.
