A 27-year-old Romanian man was detained by Munich police after a violent incident in the Paulaner tent at Oktoberfest. According to German authorities, the man allegedly tried to kiss a woman he did not know without her consent, and the conflict broke out after she rejected his gesture.
A 46-year-old Swiss citizen tried to intervene. The discussion between the two escalated, and the Romanian allegedly took a glass beer mug and struck the man on the head. The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Munich.
The mug broke on impact, and the shards injured two other women: a 48-year-old Italian woman from Munich and a 35-year-old German woman from Dachau. Both suffered cuts to their hands.
Police detained the Romanian man and took him to Munich Police custody. Criminal proceedings were opened against him on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with a dangerous weapon. The investigation is continuing to establish all the circumstances. Violence involving beer mugs has been reported at Oktoberfest over the years.
