A Romanian was arrested by the Italian State Police, being accused of facilitating the illegal entry into Italy of four migrants from Turkey. The incident took place in the Italian-Slovenian border area, near the San Pietro crossing point, where the police stopped a car driven by the Romanian.
Inside the car were four Turkish citizens without legal entry or residence documents. Italian authorities established that the Romanian knowingly and for a fee facilitated the illegal crossing of the border, thus being arrested for complicity in illegal immigration.
According to Italian legislation, the act falls under the crime of aiding illegal immigration, which can attract prison sentences from one to five years, and in the case of aggravating circumstances, the sentences can reach up to fifteen years. The four Turkish migrants stated that they intend to seek international protection in Italy.
