Maria Zaharova, the spokesperson for Russian diplomacy, accused Romania of intentions to annex the Republic of Moldova.

The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised the West to use the term "annexation" in connection with Romania and the Republic of Moldova, in the context of a legislative proposal tacitly adopted in the Chamber of Deputies of Romania. Zakharova emphasized that plans for the annexation of Moldova have been discussed for a long time in Bucharest, but there is no consensus among the Romanian authorities. She stated that unification should be the result of a mutual desire and a plebiscite, not a masked annexation.

She also criticized the disregard for the opinions of Moldovan citizens and recalled the negative memories associated with the Romanian occupation of Bessarabia. The bill, initiated by Diana Șoșoacă's party, provides for the unification of Romania with Moldova and has sparked negative reactions among pro-Russian politicians in Chișinău, although pro-European leaders have avoided commenting. President Maia Sandu mentioned that unification is not favored by the majority of the population and cannot take place without respecting the will of the people.
