The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest accused Romania on Friday of posing a threat to its own security by following the foreign policy directives of NATO and the European Union’s “aggressive wing.” The statement was published after Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Moscow, the Russian diplomat rejected the accusations regarding Russia’s involvement in the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, attributed by German authorities to the Kremlin, as well as Bucharest’s criticism concerning the attack on the Orlivka border crossing, on the border between Ukraine and Romania. The Romanian MFA protested after Russian drones attacked the area of the ferry transport crossing point between Isaccea and Orlivka on the night from Monday to Tuesday. Traffic was suspended for several hours.

The Russian Embassy claims that facilities used by Ukraine for military operations or transit constitute “legitimate targets” and described Romania’s protest as “exaggerated and completely unfounded.” Moscow also warned that military, logistical, advisory, or diplomatic support provided to Ukraine constitutes, in its view, “complicity in crimes.” The statements came after Romania and other European states condemned the hybrid actions attributed to Russia and called for a coordinated response.
