World leaders gather in New York for the UN. Iran will participate even if peace with the US remains a distant goal

Dozens of world leaders are gathering in New York for the opening of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. During “High-Level Week,” presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers will debate the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, nuclear disarmament, human rights, climate change, pandemics and the risks of artificial intelligence.

Romania is represented by President Nicușor Dan and Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu. The head of state will deliver a speech on the second day of the session, focusing on UN reform, Romania’s contribution to peace and security, as well as the need for a rules-based international order. The delegation’s agenda also includes maritime security, the war in Ukraine, the regional and food-related effects of the conflict, artificial intelligence and investment.

Alongside the debates, leaders are taking part in bilateral meetings and diplomatic events. Nicușor Dan has already met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, while a reception hosted by Donald and Melania Trump is scheduled for Wednesday.

Reform of the organization and the UN’s financial situation will be central topics, as the institution depends on contributions from member states and is facing tensions over its budget. Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, retains its veto power, while Palestinian participation and the presence of the Iranian delegation are generating new controversies. The General Assembly brings together all 193 member states, each with one vote.
