The fiscal contribution of women to the Romanian economy has been estimated at 509 billion lei in the period 2022-2024, equivalent to 24.8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the Index of Female Entrepreneurship and Leadership. The female employment rate in Romania is 53%, below the European Union average of 65%. Women represent only 19% of Parliament, compared to 37.3% in the European Parliament. Almost one million women are not integrated into the labor market, and their inclusion could bring a gain of 65 billion lei to GDP, which would represent a growth of 14.5%. The exclusion of women from the labor market leads to an annual loss of 1.6% of GDP. Mobilizing 1.3 million women by 2036 could add 1.9% to GDP. Although Romania has competencies in the STEM field, national competitiveness remains an issue, with 10% of GDP still untapped.
