The Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted in principle, on Tuesday, October 20, the appeal for annulment filed by American rapper Wiz Khalifa against the final nine-month prison sentence. However, the decision does not overturn the conviction, but allows the appeal to be examined at the next stage. The examination on the merits was scheduled for October 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
The artist, tried under the name Thomaz Cameron Jibril, is challenging the decision issued on December 18, 2025, by the Constanța Court of Appeal. The court definitively convicted him of the unlawful possession of high-risk drugs for personal consumption, after he smoked cannabis on stage at a festival held in Costinești.
The Bucharest judges admitted in principle the appeal based on Article 426(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, but rejected as inadmissible the application filed under Article 426(h). Tuesday’s ruling is final.
Admission in principle merely means passing the preliminary filter and does not order the retrial of the appeal. If the court finds the appeal well-founded, it could quash the challenged decision and order a retrial. Until a possible decision to that effect, the conviction remains in force.
