US ambassador, after WSJ revelations about Kimberly Guilfoyle: Washington has confidence in Romania’s democracy

The United States Ambassador to Romania, Darryl Nirenberg, stated in Constanța that Washington has “complete confidence in Romania’s democracy,” amid the revelations published by the Wall Street Journal about Kimberly Guilfoyle and the internal dispute within the Romanian Government.

The American diplomat conveyed that the situation must be resolved by Romania, without intervention from the United States.

“It is strictly a matter for Romania, which only Romania can resolve on its own,” Nirenberg said at an event he is attending in Constanța.

The ambassador added that democracy can be “tumultuous” and “messy,” arguing that, in some cases, this character is actually part of how the system works. In the opinion expressed by the American official, democracy remains “by far the best system we have.”

The statements represent the U.S. ambassador’s first public reaction in Constanța following the appearance of information in the Wall Street Journal concerning Kimberly Guilfoyle. Nirenberg specified that, from the beginning of the internal dispute within the Romanian Government, the United States had expressed its confidence that the authorities in Bucharest would find a solution on their own.
