Ukraine expands its fuel supply network in Romania through rail and river transport

Ukraine and Romania have agreed to expand the capacity of the rail and river routes used to supply fuel, amid Russian attacks on transport and energy infrastructure. The agreements were reached during the meeting between Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nicușor Dan, according to Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.

The official stated that the governments of the two countries are working to implement the agreements. Kyiv aims to maintain fuel flows and reduce dependence on routes exposed to attacks, particularly through the country’s southern seaports.

Ukraine is also preparing a pilot project for the underground storage of petroleum products. The network is expected to help increase reserves and ensure diesel deliveries for defense and critical infrastructure.

The decision comes after new Russian attacks on the Odesa region, which affected export infrastructure and the Orlivka border crossing, opposite Isaccea.

Romania and Ukraine agreed back in March to expand their energy cooperation and cross-border infrastructure.
