Romanian military personnel shot down two drones on Saturday evening that had entered national airspace over the Black Sea, in the Sulina area. The interim Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, announced that the aircraft were neutralized by Romanian military pilots, a few minutes after entering the country.
According to the minister, the first drone entered Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was shot down two minutes later, 25 kilometers southeast of Sulina. The second was engaged at 18:05 and shot down in the same area, approximately 20 kilometers east of Sulina, five minutes after entering national airspace.
This is the fourth unmanned aircraft shot down by Romania this summer. The incident comes after a week marked by drone attacks and naval incidents in the Black Sea, both near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria.
On Thursday, President Nicușor Dan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte for discussions on regional security. In parallel, Romanian authorities are checking whether a commercial vessel that caught fire near Sulina was hit by a drone.
