Acting Defense Minister Miruță announced on Sunday, at a press conference, that the two drones shot down last night could be Geran-4 type, of Russian origin. The aircraft were intercepted after entering Romanian airspace, and their speed, approximately 450 kilometers per hour, indicates the use of a turboprop engine.
According to the minister, this is the first time Romanian military personnel have shot down this type of drone. The aircraft were neutralized approximately four and a half minutes apart, at around 18:01 and 18:05, by the same aviation crew.
Miruță explained that drones encountered previously generally flew at 150-170 kilometers per hour, whereas the new model may have an operating range of 800-900 kilometers and a speed close to that of a fighter jet.
The intervention was prepared based on statistical models that anticipated the probable point of entry into Romanian airspace. Fighter jets were positioned in the area before the violation, and the minister described the operation as a triple first for the Ministry of Defense.
