Traian Băsescu declared that he will initiate the procedures to regain the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, which he lost due to a decision by former president Igor Dodon. Băsescu chose not to make the request during the electoral period to avoid political interpretations. His citizenship was revoked in 2019, while his wife, Maria Băsescu, retains dual citizenship. Băsescu challenged the decision in court, but without success.
