The mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz, announced the initiative to develop a strategic partnership for the creation of a rapid urban electric train network that will integrate public transport in the metropolitan area. The project, named 'Metropolitan Train Timișoara', aims to modernize and expand the railway infrastructure, which is currently underutilized. The City Hall takes on the responsibility of conducting the feasibility study and proposes collaboration with the National Railway Company.

The route will include intermodal stations and connections to key areas of the city, aiming to reduce car usage and promote a greener Timișoara. The project will serve both the peri-urban area and the peripheral neighborhoods, with additional stations in the surrounding localities. This initiative also opens the prospect of a rapid railway connection between Timișoara and Arad. The project will be subject to approval by the Local Council to advance its realization.
