Three Ukrainian citizens in an advanced state of physical exhaustion were recovered by mountain rescuers near Pop Ivanu Peak, at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters, in the Maramureș Mountains. They had crossed the border into Romania and were at risk of hypothermia due to the cold, damp conditions and inadequate equipment.
The individuals were found at a sheepfold in the area, to which they had previously been directed. Before the intervention team arrived, they had managed to light a fire, warm themselves and rest. According to their accounts, they had been on the road for seven days after crossing mountainous regions of Ukraine.
The mountain rescuers provided them with water, hot tea and food, then began the evacuation. The descent was difficult because the three were still wearing city shoes and had trouble moving across the slippery terrain covered with wet leaves. In dangerous areas, the teams installed a safety rope.
The operation ended with the three citizens being handed over to the Valea Vișeului Border Police. They had no other medical problems requiring additional care.
