The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova announced that the drone shot down in Galați County is of the Shahed 136 (Geran 2) type and flew over the airspace of the Republic of Moldova. The drone was detected on August 16 at 04:31, coming from the locality of Cotlovina, Reni region, Ukraine.
It flew for 18 minutes over Moldova, crossing the village of Etulia in Gagauzia. At 04:40, a Border Police patrol heard the sound of the drone in the direction of the localities of Cișmichioi (RM) - Dolinskoe (UA). The drone left Moldovan airspace at 04:49, heading towards Galați, Romania.
The Ministry of Defense in Chișinău specified that the drone entered Moldovan airspace without authorization following airstrikes by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. On Sunday morning, a drone entered national airspace from Moldova, being shot down approximately 24 km north of Galați, according to MApN.
