The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania has initiated a project that requires police officers to present aggressors who violate protection orders directly to the prosecutor, in order to determine the necessary measures. This measure comes after 17 police officers from Mureș and Teleorman were investigated for their interventions in cases of domestic violence, including in the case of women who were killed and had protection orders. The head of the Romanian Police acknowledged the serious mistakes made in managing these situations. Additionally, a report from the General Prosecutor's Office highlighted that judicial authorities did not fulfill their duties properly.
The draft law, which amends Law 217/2003, emphasizes the importance of rapid and correct intervention to protect victims, considering that many assaulted women refuse monitoring through electronic bracelets due to trauma. Bogdan Despescu, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, emphasized that a subjective assessment or an unclear procedure can have fatal consequences.
