The Romanian Senate adopted on Monday a bill that brings important changes for the protection of victims of domestic violence, according to statements by Alina Gorghiu, the chairwoman of the special committee "Romania without domestic violence". The bill, which was voted unanimously, will go to the Chamber of Deputies for approval. Among the essential changes are the automatic extension of the provisional protection order until the request is resolved in the first instance, the elimination of the possibility for victims to withdraw the request for a protection order, and the increase of penalties for repeat offenders. Additionally, the right to request a new protection order has been expanded, and an amendment to the Penal Code has been introduced, which makes the withdrawal of the criminal complaint ineffective in cases of domestic violence. Gorghiu emphasizes that these measures strengthen the protection of victims and align Romanian legislation with European standards. The bill is an important step towards ensuring the safety of the vulnerable.
