The basic Romanian vocabulary includes about 60-70 words of Hungarian origin, such as 'neam', 'gând', 'holdă' and 'belșug'. Linguist Bogdan Harhăță emphasizes that these linguistic borrowings are the result of a long-standing coexistence between the two peoples, starting from the 9th century. The list of words includes common terms, but also some archaic words.

Harhăță mentions that many of these words entered the Romanian language through literature and regional dialects. The linguist also recalls the Hungarian-origin toponyms in Romania, such as Timișoara and Hunedoara, as well as words that have been borrowed from Romanian into Hungarian. The article also addresses the controversies related to the etymology of certain words, such as 'mântuire' and 'canaf', highlighting the complexity of linguistic contacts between Romanian and Hungarian.
