Context: Magyar is facing a criminal investigation and has announced fiscal measures, while using Romania as a political target in disputes
Before the period in which he presented the 2027 budget, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar had been questioned by Hungarian prosecutors in the case related to an incident in 2024, when he is suspected of taking the phone of a man who was filming him and throwing it into the Danube. The questioning took place in Budapest, after parliament lifted his immunity on September 28; Magyar publicly stated that he did not admit to the act.
Also in this context, Magyar asked the Tisza party's parliamentary group to vote unanimously to lift his immunity, in the context of the investigation, and also presented a fiscal direction: Hungary was to tax “large fortunes” starting on January 1, 2027, with stricter rules than the government had initially promised.
Abroad, before the criticism in Parliament, Magyar used Romania as an example in disputes over energy infrastructure: he compared the operation of the Paks nuclear power plant (presented as operating at full capacity) with the shutdown of the Cernavodă power plant, amid the low level of the Danube.
