A NASA-funded study has found that the lunar surface in the south polar region is developing wrinkles that generate moonquakes that can last for hours, endangering future colonists and human equipment. These phenomena are caused by the cooling and shrinking of the moon's core, which causes an overall shrinking of the lunar crust.
