The formation of the new polar vortex has begun over the North Pole, and its development could influence weather across the Northern Hemisphere in winter 2026–2027. According to long-range forecasts, the cold season could be marked by sudden changes, episodes of severe cold, blizzards, and heavy snowfall.
The polar vortex is a vast area of cold air and strong winds that forms in the Arctic stratosphere and helps keep cold air masses near the North Pole. If it weakens or is disrupted, cold air can move southward toward Europe, the United States, and Canada.
An important factor is the development of a Super El Niño phenomenon in the tropical Pacific, where water temperatures are forecast to be well above normal. Climate data indicate that this phenomenon could alter global atmospheric circulation and affect the polar vortex in January and February 2027.
Experts stress, however, that long-range forecasts involve a high degree of uncertainty. The intensity and location of cold spells can be estimated more accurately as the cold season approaches.
